Special Features:
Stocks from the founding year of 1995 were selected for the first release of Arran 25. Initially, 65% matured in former bourbon casks and 35% in former sherry casks. For the final twelve months, all the whisky was transferred into First Fill and Refill Sherry Hogsheads: sherry casks being used for whisky maturation for the first time, or casks already used for that purpose.
Released in 2020, the inaugural edition comprised 3,000 bottles worldwide and marked the first quarter-century of production in Lochranza. The 25-year-old single malt joined the core range as its oldest age-stated bottling at the time. The edition was discontinued in 2025.
This non-smoky single malt is bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in a wooden box.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Pronounced oak notes accompany a gentle hint of nutmeg. Sweet impressions of baked ripe figs, sultanas and black cherries add to the aromas.
- Palate: Fruitcake, toasted almonds and cinnamon come together on the palate. Juicy citrus notes of oranges and mandarins are rounded out by Manuka honey, muscovado sugar and baked apricots. White pepper adds another spicy accent.
- Finish: The finish is creamy and spicy, with dark chocolate, walnuts and dark fruit compote.
Distillery/Bottler:
Lochranza lies in the north of the Isle of Arran. The distillery grew out of an initiative by former Chivas director Harold Currie, who wanted to establish a new distillery here while Scottish distilleries elsewhere were closing. On 29 June 1995, the first spirit flowed through the spirit safe, bringing legal distillation back to Arran after 158 years.
Water from Loch na Davie played a decisive role in the choice of location. It reaches the distillery via the Easan Biorach stream. In Lochranza, yeast ferments the wort in wooden washbacks; the resulting alcoholic liquid is then distilled twice in copper pot stills. Cask selection subsequently shapes the whisky’s character. Arran Single Malt is produced in Lochranza.
