Special Features:

Small casks give Arran The Bothy its distinctive maturation influence. The single malt first matures in first-fill ex-bourbon Barrels before moving into American oak Quarter Casks with a capacity of 125 litres. These smaller casks have a greater internal wood surface area relative to the volume of liquid, resulting in a more intense oak influence.

The cask selection brings together a full body and fresh fruit with vanilla, honeyed sweetness, warming oak and peppery spice. Tropical fruit notes and coconut complement this character. Small casks were also common in the whisky trade of the 18th and 19th centuries because they were easier to transport on and around Arran.

The whisky is bottled at its natural cask strength of 56.2%. Its colour comes entirely from the cask, and it is not chill-filtered. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in a presentation tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, lemon zest and candy floss mingle with a hint of cocoa.
• Palate: On the palate, pineapple and green apple meet vanilla. A light chilli note adds a spicy accent.
• Finish: Fruity impressions and aromatic spice notes linger on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lochranza Distillery is located on the Isle of Arran. Proximity to Loch na Davie was a decisive factor in choosing the site. From this loch in the hills behind the distillery, water flows down over six waterfalls along the Easan Biorach stream. Its Gaelic name means “sharp waterfalls”.

Arran is made by mashing malted Concerto barley with water from Loch na Davie. After yeast is added, the resulting wort ferments in wooden washbacks. Two distillations in copper pot stills follow. The initially colourless spirit only develops its colour and cask character during maturation in oak casks. Cask selection is therefore a central part of the work at Lochranza.
