Special Features:

A finish in a small Oloroso sherry octave defines this Aultmore bottling. The ten-year-old single malt spends a further three months in the handmade cask. A smaller cask has more internal wood surface relative to the volume of whisky than a large one, giving the spirit more intensive contact with sherry-seasoned wood during the finish. The whisky is bottled at 53.8% in 0.5-litre bottles, without added colouring or chill filtration.

Alongside a malty core are dates, figs, plums and dark forest berries. Cocoa, pecans and maple syrup give the fruit a nutty sweetness. Ginger, pepper, black tea, brine and chocolate biscuits add further notes.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, dark cherry syrup, prunes and blackberries mingle with chocolate-coated cocoa beans, nuts and gingerbread.
• Palate: The whisky is full and rich on the palate. Candied oranges, dark chocolate, sweet barley malt, dark cherries and plums meet cinnamon rolls, hazelnuts and toasted almonds. Herbal tea, leather, tobacco, cloves and dark oak add further notes.
• Finish: Sweetness and chocolate linger on the finish, with a subtle herbal note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Aultmore is in Speyside, north of Keith. Founded by Alexander Edward, the distillery began production in 1897 and makes the single malt used for this edition. Independent bottler Atom Brands selected the whisky for its Darkness range and is responsible for its finishing and bottling.

For Darkness, Atom Brands selects distinctive single malts and gives them a further three months in small, handmade sherry octaves. This Aultmore was finished in an Oloroso sherry octave.
