Ballechin represents Edradour's heavily peated side. For this single malt, the distillery uses malted barley with a phenol content of at least 50 ppm. This figure refers to the malt, not the finished whisky.

Ex-bourbon casks account for the greater share of the ten-year maturation; whisky from ex-Oloroso sherry casks complements the bottling and adds depth to its flavour. Ballechin 10 is bottled at 46% without chill filtration or colouring. The miniature contains 0.05 litres and comes in a presentation tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, herbs and grass meet smoke with a sweet note.
• Palate: On the palate, chocolate and oak combine with spicy, earthy smoke.
• Finish: The finish leaves a smoky impression reminiscent of smouldering, burnt heather.

Distillery/Bottler:

Edradour is located in Perthshire and was founded in 1825 by a group of local farmers. The distillery has belonged to Andrew Symington since 2002. Under his leadership, the range expanded; heavily peated Ballechin has also been produced here since 2003. Its name recalls another farm distillery in Perthshire, which closed in 1927 and whose peated whisky was mentioned by whisky historian Alfred Barnard in the 19th century.

In its traditional facilities, Edradour uses an open cast-iron mash tun. A Morton Refrigerator cools the wort with cold water before it passes into Oregon pine vessels for fermentation. Distillation takes place in small copper stills. The vapours then condense in worm tubs: coiled copper pipes immersed in water-cooled tanks. This equipment provides a tangible insight into the working methods of the historic farm distillery.
