Special Features:

This heavily peated Ballechin combines twenty years of maturation in first-fill bourbon barrels with natural cask strength. The casks previously held Old Grand Dad bourbon. The whisky was distilled in February and March 2004 and bottled on 4 March 2024. The small batch yielded 2,016 bottles at 52.8%, without added colouring or chill filtration.

Long bourbon maturation sets vanilla, caramel and milk chocolate against powerful peat. Sea air, herbs and white pepper provide a contrast to the sweetness. The whisky feels oily on the palate; oak and sweet spice mingle with warming peat in the long finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, sea air and seaweed mingle with vanilla fudge, milk chocolate and herbs. Gentle oak smoke accompanies these notes.
• Palate: On the palate, powerful peat, vanilla caramel and chocolate meet herbs and white pepper. The texture feels oily.
• Finish: The long finish combines sweet spice and oak with warming peat, white pepper and creamy vanilla.

Distillery/Bottler:

Ballechin is Edradour Distillery's heavily peated Single Malt. The distillery has produced this style since 2003. Its name recalls a former farm distillery in Perthshire that closed in 1927, whose peated whisky was described by the distillery chronicler Alfred Barnard in the 19th century.

Edradour was founded in 1825 as a cooperative of local farmers. In its historic farm buildings, the distillery uses an open cast-iron mash tun and Oregon pine washbacks. A Morton cooler cools the wort with water. The traditional distilling equipment includes two copper pot stills and worm tubs: in these water-cooled vessels, alcohol vapour condenses inside coiled copper pipes.
