For the Curious Casks series, Warehouse and Samples Coordinator George Paterson and Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie selected a single American Bourbon Barrel. Distilled in 2009, the whisky matured in it for 14 years before being bottled at 47.8%. Cask 8914 gives this bottling its individual character. The whisky is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Sweet American oak meets vanilla, candied citrus and toasted malt. Fruity sweetness and gentle oak spice emerge in the finish. Selecting a single cask puts its individual expression at the centre, rather than building the flavour from several casks.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, toasted oak and a creamy custard note meet citrus fruit.
• Palate: Candied orange, vanilla and oak come together in balance on the palate.
• Finish: The finish is fruity and sweet, with gentle oak spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

William Grant built The Balvenie in Dufftown beside Glenfiddich, and distillation there began in 1893. The distillery still malts some of its barley on its own malting floors. An on-site cooperage prepares and maintains the casks, while warehouse specialists draw samples and select casks for bottling. Kelsey McKechnie works in the distillery’s Malt Master team. The Balvenie remains part of the family-owned William Grant & Sons and bottled this whisky itself.
