A single Oloroso Sherry Puncheon shapes this smoky Benriach Cask Edition. Distilled on 18 July 1994, the Single Malt matured for 27 years in cask number 2059 before being bottled in 2021. The cask yielded 659 individually numbered bottles. This bottling forms part of the European selection of the Cask Edition Collection 2022, released in March 2022.

For the Cask Edition, Master Blender Rachel Barrie selects individual casks rather than marrying whiskies from different casks. This release combines chocolate and candied fruit with nutty, smoky notes. It was bottled at a cask strength of 53%, without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in a premium box.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, smoked pine nuts and orange wine mingle with crème caramel and maple syrup. Dark chocolate fudge cake adds another layer.
• Palate: On the palate, lime and dark chocolate meet candied pear. Smoked walnut bread, liquorice and baked currants complete the flavour profile.
• Finish: The finish leaves a sweet impression.

Distillery/Bottler:

John Duff founded Benriach in 1898 on the site of the former Riach farm in northern Speyside. By 1900, the distillery had to close following the Pattison crisis. Its malting floors remained in operation, however, supplying the neighbouring Longmorn Distillery with malted barley. Benriach did not resume whisky production until 1965. Since the early 1970s, the distillery has also used malt smoked with Highland peat; triple distillation was later added as another production style.

Today, Benriach works with unpeated, peated and triple-distilled spirit. Four additions of water are used during mashing to extract as much fermentable sugar as possible from the barley. Slow distillation with an extended heart cut supports the distillery's fruit-forward character. A wide range of cask types from different wine- and spirit-producing regions is available for maturation. All three spirit styles mature in the original Warehouse 13, built in 1898. Rachel Barrie has been responsible for selecting and blending the whiskies as Master Blender since 2017.
