Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 46% | Chill filtration: No | Colouring: No
Special Features:
Benriach The Twenty One combines unpeated and peated whiskies matured for at least 21 years in Bourbon Barrels, sherry casks, virgin oak casks made from previously unused oak, and Bordeaux red wine casks. The whiskies from these four cask types are then married together. This is therefore not a sequential maturation of the same whisky in four different casks.
During the long maturation, the sweet smoke softens and mingles with fruit, malt and oak. Alongside orchard fruit, toasted pine wood and creamy malt notes shape its character. Its honey-gold colour comes entirely from the casks.
The single malt is bottled at 46% alcohol without chill filtration. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in gift packaging.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, berries and apples mingle with wild honey and spicy oak notes.
- Palate: The palate reveals candied grapes, rich cocoa and smoked pine nuts. Towards the end, caramelised pear and honey-sweet smoke emerge.
- Finish: Dried fruit and nutty notes linger in the finish, accompanied by gentle spice on the tongue.
Distillery/Bottler:
John Duff founded Benriach in 1898 on the site of the former Riach Farm in northern Speyside. The distillery draws its water from a mineral-rich aquifer deep beneath its grounds.
Benriach produces three distinct spirit styles: unpeated whisky, whisky shaped by Highland peat, and triple-distilled whisky. Together with a varied selection of cask types, these form the foundation of Master Blender Dr Rachel Barrie's work. The Twenty One combines the unpeated and peated styles.
