Special Features:

The Laddie Eight retains the fruity, floral character of Bruichladdich’s young spirit, complemented by salty citrus freshness. Adam Hannett developed this expression, originally intended for travel retail, from unpeated spirit. The whisky matures in warehouses on the shores of Loch Indaal; its youngest components are at least eight years old.

The recipe is created by marrying whiskies from the same distillery that have matured in different ways. A batch of The Laddie Eight typically comprises around 55 casks, two distillation vintages and five cask types. This is not a fixed composition for every batch: maturation time, cask condition and barley origin are considered together during selection. All the barley used comes from Scotland.

This official bottling has an alcohol content of 50% and is neither chill-filtered nor coloured. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in a metal tin.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Fresh apples and slightly underripe pears appear first on the nose, followed by pear sweets, apricots and pineapple in fruit syrup. Vanilla and oak mingle with sweet malt notes and a hint of straw. Gently warming the glass in the hand brings out gorse blossom and honeysuckle.
  • Palate: A peppery opening gives way to the sweetness of mango and peach. Oak, vanilla, lemon, honey and toffee join in, with a creamy, buttery mouthfeel. A second sip reveals hints of raspberry and strawberry, alongside citrus fruit and orange marmalade. Sweet malt notes link the fruity and woody impressions.
  • Finish: Maritime freshness, floral heather honey and citrus notes linger through the long finish. Vanilla is particularly persistent.

Distillery/Bottler:

Bruichladdich was founded on Islay in 1881. The distillery continues to use manually controlled distillation, allowing differences in barley origin, season and individual distillation runs to inform its cask selection. Fermentation takes place in traditional wooden washbacks using a combination of fast- and slow-working yeast strains.

Bruichladdich also uses different water sources for different purposes. Production water comes from its own An Torran reservoir. To bring the whisky to bottling strength, the distillery uses water from a nearby spring on farmer James Brown’s land. The origin and processing of its raw materials are thus as much a part of its approach as the selection of maturation casks.
