Special Features:
The Classic Laddie is Bruichladdich's unpeated, non-smoky signature bottling made from Scottish barley. Each batch has a newly composed recipe drawing on different vintages and cask types. On average, it comprises 76 casks, four distillation vintages, three barley categories and seven cask types; individual batches may differ from this composition. Its character comes from balancing fruit, barley malt, oak and maritime freshness rather than following a fixed formula.
The whisky carries no age statement and is bottled at 50%, without chill filtration or added colouring. It matures entirely on Islay. The higher bottling strength supports its pronounced barley character. To compose the blend, Adam Hannett tastes the individual whiskies and assesses their aroma, flavour and mouthfeel over several weeks. This preserves the recognisable fruity, floral house style while allowing subtle differences between batches. The recipe code on the bottle provides access to the cask composition of each batch.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Barley sugar and a hint of mint appear first, followed by freshly cut wildflowers with suggestions of buttercup, daisy, meadowsweet, myrtle, primrose and cherry blossom. Delicate sea spray and sea thrift complement the bouquet. With a little time and a few drops of water, caramelised fruits emerge; lemon sweets, honey, mandarin and a Scottish sugar confection add further accents.
- Palate: The whisky feels delicate and refreshing on the palate. Sweet oak and barley appear together before ripe green fruits, brown sugar and sweet malt follow.
- Finish: The finish is soft and rounded. Lively fruit notes and subtle sea spray balance one another.
Distillery/Bottler:
Bruichladdich Distillery was founded on Islay in 1881. For The Classic Laddie, it uses only barley grown in Scotland to produce unpeated spirit. Fermentation takes place in traditional wooden washbacks with a combination of fast- and slow-working yeast strains. This is followed by slow distillation; some of the original Victorian equipment remains in use.
Bruichladdich produces and marries the whiskies for this official bottling. They mature on Islay and are bottled there. Islay spring water is used to adjust the bottling strength. Cask selection takes account of factors including previous contents, condition and maturation time: younger whiskies tend to contribute cereal and malt notes, while longer maturation can increase the influence of oak. What matters is how these qualities work together, not age alone.
