Bushmills Steamship Bourbon Cask derives its character from full maturation in first-fill Kentucky bourbon casks with char level 3. Bushmills works with coopers in Louisville to source these casks. Made from American white oak and previously used for bourbon, the casks are emptied and deliberately charred before being sent to Bushmills and filled with triple-distilled single malt. Here, first fill means their first use for whiskey maturation after holding bourbon.

Bourbon Cask Reserve is the third release in the Steamship Collection. Originally developed for travel retail, the range commemorates the 125th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the SS Bushmills. Honey, vanilla and toasted oak express the bourbon cask influence in this release. The whiskey is offered at 40% in a bottle containing 1 litre and comes in a cylindrical tin.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, tropical fruits mingle with honey, vanilla and crème brûlée. Malt and a subtle charred note round out the bouquet.
• Palate: On the palate, honey and vanilla meet banana and peach. Light oak spice accompanies these impressions, joined by honeyed malt notes, toasted oak and crème brûlée.
• Finish: The medium-long to long finish is smooth, with an herbal note.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Old Bushmills Distillery stands in the village of Bushmills in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, near the Giant’s Causeway. Its water comes from Saint Columb's Rill, a tributary of the River Bush. This watercourse flows from the Antrim Hills through the region’s basalt rock towards the coast. Bushmills brings the key stages of whiskey production together at one site: malt spirits are distilled, whiskeys are matured and blended, and bottling takes place there. Steamship Bourbon Cask comes from this distillery and is an official distillery bottling.
