Special Features:

A second maturation in Moscatel casks gives this Caol Ila Distillers Edition its distinctive character. The single malt first matures in American and European oak casks previously used for whisky maturation. The subsequent maturation takes place in American oak casks previously seasoned with Moscatel, with re-charred interiors. These casks have new, heavily charred American oak heads.

The Distillers Edition range has been released annually in limited quantities since 1997. It combines casks selected to suit each distillery’s style with an additional maturation period. For Caol Ila, the powerful smoke remains, complemented by sweetness and restrained fruit. This official bottling has an alcohol content of 43% and comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Smoke and spice are immediately apparent. As it opens up, fresh, clear notes emerge, recalling a campfire extinguished with water. Fruity impressions remain restrained alongside them.
  • Palate: The body is medium-weight, with a firm, oily and smooth texture. A sweet opening coats the palate before powerful smoke comes through. Sweetness and subtle oak spice balance the concentrated smokiness.
  • Finish: The long, powerful finish remains smoky and spicy, warming the palate.

Distillery/Bottler:

Caol Ila is situated near Port Askaig on Islay, overlooking the Sound of Islay towards the island of Jura. The distillery’s Gaelic name means “Sound of Islay”. Hector Henderson founded the distillery in 1846; the available supply of fresh water was one reason for choosing the location. For many years, supplies and casks were transported aboard the coastal vessel Pibroch.

Today, Caol Ila is one of the island’s largest Scotch whisky producers, making both peated and unpeated single malts. Heat exchangers for wort, fermented mash and cleaning systems help save energy during production. The grain residues left after mashing are reused as animal feed.
