Special Features:

This Clynelish matured for 47 years in a Refill American Hogshead. Distilled on 1 March 1977, the single malt was cared for by Gordon & MacPhail over several decades before being bottled from cask 2069 for the Private Collection on 22 October 2024. Just 96 bottles were produced at a natural cask strength of 45.5%, without added colouring or chill filtration. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and is presented in a wooden box.

Aged leather, wax and honey meet red apple and banana. These fruit notes complement the nutty, spicy side of this very old malt, while its oily texture is accompanied by a subtle hint of smoke.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, waxy notes and oily nuances mingle with sweet orange.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky is distinctly oily and mouth-filling. Butterscotch, citrus fruit and walnut combine with ginger and black pepper, while a subtle hint of smoke complements the spice.
• Finish: Tropical fruit and elegant old oak linger on the long finish. Wax and gentle spice notes also remain present.

Distillery/Bottler:

Clynelish stands near the coastal village of Brora in Sutherland and belongs to Diageo. The present distillery was built opposite the original site, which later became known as Brora. Its stills were modelled on those of the older distillery, and both drew water from the Clynemilton Burn. Natural oily compounds that accumulate in the vessel collecting the distillation feints contribute to its characteristic waxy house style.

Gordon & MacPhail was founded in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail as a grocery shop in Elgin and is a family-run business. As an independent bottler, it matches its cask selection to each spirit and its maturation. For many decades, it had new-make spirit from Scottish distilleries filled into its own casks and subsequently matured at the distilleries or in its warehouses in Elgin. For the Private Collection, members of the Urquhart family select particularly characterful mature stocks.
