Half a century in a single Refill Sherry Hogshead shapes this Dallas Dhu from Gordon & MacPhail's Private Collection. The whisky was distilled on 10 June 1969 and matured in cask 1656 until bottling on 12 June 2019. The cask yielded 176 bottles at a cask strength of 43.1%.

Its mahogany colour complements a character combining fruitcake and sweet almond notes with dark chocolate, wood tannins and a hint of smoke. The 0.7-litre bottle is presented in a wooden box with a geometric wood pattern.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose recalls rich fruitcake with raisins, sultanas and orange peel. Candied ginger, almond marzipan and dark treacle toffee add an elegant sweetness. Subtle woodsmoke and tobacco notes sit over a restrained oak note.
• Palate: Toffee apples combine with dark chocolate, fruit and nuts on the palate. Crushed peppercorns bring warmth to the mouth. Further spice notes remain in the background as wood tannins become increasingly prominent.
• Finish: The finish is long and warming. Roasted coffee bean notes give way to a subtle herbal note, leaving a clear, well-defined finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Dallas Dhu lies near Forres in western Speyside. Founded in 1898, the distillery used a waterwheel to power parts of its production until 1971. Changes of ownership, a fire and barley rationing during the Second World War interrupted its history on several occasions. Whisky production at that time came to an end in 1983.

Based in Elgin, Gordon & MacPhail has overseen whisky maturation since 1895, working with more than 100 Scottish distilleries. The company matches its cask selection to each spirit. Its current practices include sherry casks made to its specifications in Jerez and seasoned with wine; Gordon & MacPhail sources former bourbon casks with support from the Speyside Cooperage. Members of the owning Urquhart family select particularly long-matured Single Malts for the Private Collection.
