Distillery Edition Batch 002 is a ten-year-old Elsburn single malt from the southern Harz. It matured entirely in first-fill sherry casks from Jerez and was bottled in 2024 at 48%. Limited to 1,000 bottles, the edition has its natural colour, is non-chill-filtered and comes in a wooden box.

Sherry cask maturation shapes its fruity, spicy character, with raisins, mandarins, baking spices, vanilla and caramel. A subtle smoky note complements the profile. Cloves also contribute to its spicy impressions.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals warm vanilla pastries, juicy nectarines, dates and raisins. Cinnamon, allspice and anise emerge over time. Caramel and cream sweets complement the sweet notes.
• Palate: On the palate, fruit compote combines with sweet vanilla. Toasted oak adds accents, joined by a little orange marmalade, liquorice, malt pastries and nutmeg. Cinnamon and cloves add to the spice on the palate.
• Finish: Ripe plums and bright oak spice linger in the medium-length finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hercynian Distilling Co. / Hammerschmiede produces Elsburn in Zorge, a district of Walkenried in the southern Harz. Spirit production began in 1985, and the first casks were filled with whisky spirit in 2002. The move from Wieda to the Elsbach valley gave rise to the name The Glen Els. Since 2019, new bottlings have carried the name Elsburn. The Buchholz family is behind the distillery.

The distillery ferments its wort in French oak washbacks and distils it twice in wood-fired pot stills. During the second distillation, Anna Buchholz or an experienced distiller determines the cuts between heads, heart and tails; only the heart is intended for cask maturation. Its cask stocks include many different previous wine fillings. Bottling, closing, sealing and labelling are carried out by hand.
