Special Features:

The Mostello finish links this single malt to one of the distillery's specialities: its pear dessert wine made from regional cider pears. The whisky first matured for five years in charred former red wine barriques, followed by a 13-month finish in Mostello barriques. Chocolate and malt notes meet the sweetness of dried fruit.

The 2018 vintage is Farthofer's first single malt made with malt from its own organic maltings. The limited Double Cask Edition is bottled in 0.5-litre bottles at 43% alcohol. The whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured. Once sold out, this unique combination of vintage and Double Cask maturation will not be produced again in this form.

The whisky is bottled by hand. Each bottle bears a wax seal that is also stamped by hand.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Rich dark chocolate leads on the nose. Nougat, roasted malt and further roasted notes complete the aroma.
• Palate: The whisky is full-bodied on the palate. Dark chocolate and creamy nougat emerge first over a robust malt base. The red wine influence combines with the delicate sweetness and fruitiness of the Mostello finish.
• Finish: The very long finish carries dried pears, subtle dried fruit and delicate woody notes.

Distillery/Bottler:

Destillerie Farthofer is a family business in the Mostviertel region of Lower Austria. Its history began in 1867 with a cider farm; Josef Farthofer, representing the fifth generation, developed the business into an organic distillery. In Biberbach, the family farms 45 hectares organically and operates its own drum maltings. This allows small batches of grain to be processed separately and rare varieties such as emmer and hulless oats to be malted.

A closed raw-material cycle is part of the distillery's approach: stillage from distillation is used as fertiliser, while fruit stones serve as fuel. Casks are also prepared on site. They are dismantled, planed on the inside, charred over a fire basket and reassembled.
