Long maturation in bourbon barrels brings together Fettercairn 28 Year Old’s tropical distillery character and darker, nutty accents. This Single Malt spends its 28 years of maturation in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels and is bottled at 42%. In the glass, it displays a deep, shimmering gold colour.

This bottling is among the personal favourites of Stewart Walker, whose career at Fettercairn began when this whisky was distilled. It earned 96 out of 100 points and Double Platinum at the Beverage Testing Institute. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Pineapple and melon emerge first on the nose, followed by dark sugar syrup and banana. A hint of warm ginger and liquorice completes the bouquet.
• Palate: Citrus peel and black pepper appear on the palate. Walnut, vanilla and further spice notes soften these impressions.
• Finish: Coffee and apricot linger on the finish with a hint of sweet balsamic vinegar.

Distillery/Bottler:

Fettercairn is situated in the village of the same name in Aberdeenshire, at the foot of the Cairngorms. Sir Alexander Ramsay opened the distillery in 1824 after campaigning for the legalisation and licensing of whisky distillation in Scotland. He recruited previously illicit whisky makers as its first distillers, drawing on their practical experience.

A distinctive feature of the distillery is the copper cooling ring fitted to its stills. The technique was developed in the mid-1950s under Alastair Menzies: water flows over the outside of the copper, cooling it. This causes more vapour to condense inside, while lighter vapours continue to rise. The process contributes to the distillery’s tropical, fruity house style. The flowing water also creates a green patina on the copper, whose changing colours are reflected in the packaging design.
