Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 52.8% | Chill filtration: No | Colouring: No
Special Features:
This Speyside single malt completed its maturation with a three-month finish in a small sherry Octave cask. Glen Moray distilled the whisky in 2007; after a total of 16 years, Duncan Taylor bottled it in 2024 from cask #7040573. The release comprises just 77 bottles at 52.8%, with no added colouring and no chill filtration.
A small Octave cask has a larger internal wood surface area relative to its liquid volume than a large cask. This can give the wood a greater influence during a short finishing period. In this bottling, floral aromas combine with apple pie, while fruit compote, sweet syrup, toasted almonds and cinnamon take centre stage on the palate.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose reveals floral notes, freshly baked apple pie and dried grass, with a hint of zesty lemon.
- Palate: On the palate, the whisky recalls fruit compote with cinnamon and sugar. Sweet cake batter, plenty of syrup and toasted almonds add to the flavours.
- Finish: Sweet and fruity notes linger through the long finish.
Distillery/Bottler:
Glen Moray has been producing whisky since 1897 in Elgin, on the former site of the Elgin West Brewery beside the River Lossie. The distillery uses water from the river and malted barley, and distils in traditional copper stills. Records from its early years already show the use of different cask types. This willingness to experiment continues to shape its whisky range today.
Duncan Taylor is responsible for this independent bottling and its final Octave maturation. For The Octave range, the company has worked with small casks for more than four decades, giving already matured whiskies a second phase of maturation. The Octaves are made in Spain to the company's specifications and introduce sherry influences during this finishing stage.
