Special Features:

A two-year finish in Portuguese port wine casks shapes this Glen Moray from the Heritage Collection. Before the finish, the single malt matures for 19 years in American oak casks previously used for bourbon. The spicy sweetness of this initial maturation is followed by the wine-derived influence of port, which adds dark chocolate notes and a full-bodied, velvety character.

Introduced in 2019, this release is produced in small batches. Glen Moray uses casks from Porto Cruz for the finish and bottles the whisky at 46.3%. It is neither chill filtered nor treated with colouring. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Intense berry aromas meet creamy vanilla and bold caramel on the nose. A subtle gingerbread note complements the sweet, fruity aromas.
  • Palate: Blackcurrants and liquorice initially take centre stage on the palate. Soft caramel toffee and chocolate with a chilli note then emerge. The whisky feels full-bodied and balanced.
  • Finish: Dark chocolate and caramelised raisins linger on the tongue, giving the finish a rich fullness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glen Moray stands beside the River Lossie in Elgin, in Scotland’s Speyside region. The distillery was established on the site of the Elgin West Brewery, which had been brewing beer since 1830. Whisky spirit first flowed from the stills here on 13 September 1897. Even then, Glen Moray used Marsala and sherry casks alongside other cask types, giving its exploration of different wine casks roots that reach back to the distillery’s early days.

Glen Moray makes its whisky with malted barley and water from the River Lossie. Fermentation lasts around 60 hours, followed by double distillation in copper pot stills. Only the heart of the distillation run enters casks for maturation, while the heads and tails are distilled again. Experience with different cask histories led to the first Chardonnay- and Chenin Blanc-cask finishes in 1999. Today, the Heritage Collection builds on this work with longer-matured single malts.
