Maturation entirely in Oloroso sherry casks shapes the fruity, spicy character of Glenfarclas 105. This miniature contains 0.05 litres of the Speyside single malt at 60% alcohol. The whisky is non-chill-filtered and has no added colouring.

The name 105 refers to the former British alcohol measurement system: 105 proof corresponds to 60% alcohol. The history of this cask-strength bottling began in 1968 with George S. Grant, making it one of the early commercially available cask-strength whiskies. A little water can bring its concentrated fruit notes further to the fore.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Pronounced oak notes meet apple and pear on the nose. Dark toffee adds sweetness to the layered aroma. Hints of sweet cream pastries, citrus fruit and fresh woodland add to the aroma. With a little time in the glass, the scent becomes more pronounced.
• Palate: The whisky opens dry and powerful on the palate. Pronounced spice quickly develops, accompanied by a subtle oak note and sherry-influenced fruit. The citrus notes take on a sweeter, pastry-like character, recalling baked orange tart and lemon meringue cake. Chocolatey malt, raisins and pepper complement the flavour. The texture feels creamy and concentrated.
• Finish: Despite the high alcohol strength, the finish feels soft and rounded. It is warming, with lingering spicy impressions. A full, chocolatey note on the finish recalls a spiced dessert.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glenfarclas is in Ballindalloch in Speyside, at the foot of Ben Rinnes. Founded in 1836, the distillery has belonged to the Grant family since John Grant bought it in 1865. It remains an independent family business.

Glenfarclas uses spring water from Ben Rinnes in its production. Fermentation takes around 72 hours. The fermented liquid is then distilled twice in a plant with six copper pot stills. The stills are directly fired with natural gas; moving chains in the wash stills prevent solid material from scorching on the bottom. For maturation, the distillery uses traditional dunnage warehouses, where the casks are stacked no more than three high.
