Special Features:

A second maturation in Amontillado-seasoned American oak adds depth to this Glenkinchie Distillers Edition without overshadowing its light Lowland character. The whisky first matures in previously used American and European oak casks. For the subsequent maturation, it enters American oak casks previously seasoned with Amontillado, with re-charred interiors. These casks also receive new, heavily charred American oak heads.

The cask selection brings together Glenkinchie's grassy character, nutty notes and an interplay of sweetness and dryness. The Distillers Edition belongs to a series released annually in limited quantities since 1997, for which suitable casks are individually selected. This Single Malt is bottled at 43% and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, dry wine notes sit alongside sweetish, nutty impressions of barley and cask wood. The aromas are clear and balanced.
  • Palate: On the palate, the whisky starts slightly oily and malty-sweet before quickly becoming spicier. Hints of raisins and dates complement the gentle grape sweetness. The texture is creamy and smooth; from the mid-palate onwards, it becomes drier, while warming wood spice balances the sweetness.
  • Finish: The very long finish is drying, with pronounced oak. A delicate white pepper spice accompanies the lingering flavours.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glenkinchie is situated near Pencaitland in East Lothian, close to Edinburgh. Its proximity to Scotland's capital has earned the distillery the nickname “The Edinburgh Malt”. Its history began in 1825, when brothers John and George Rate founded Milton Distillery; it was renamed Glenkinchie in 1837. The light, floral and grassy house style is a characteristic expression of the Lowlands.

In the 1890s, the site was extensively rebuilt as a large model distillery. Its equipment includes two exceptionally large stills. They have been steam-heated since 1981; the wash still used for the first distillation alone holds around 32000 litres. The Distillers Edition builds on this distilling heritage with a second cask maturation specifically tailored to the house style.
