Special Features:

A First Fill Sherry Butt shapes this long-matured Glenrothes from the Artist #12 series. Distilled in 1995, the single malt spent over 25 years in cask number 6983 before being bottled for La Maison du Whisky in 2022. This single-cask release comprises 448 bottles at a natural cask strength of 55.5%.

Gesine Arps created the whisky’s artistic counterpart: her design forms part of the twelfth Artist collection, whose theme is Antipodes. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in gift packaging. The whisky is non-chill filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose is rich and creamy. Dates and figs mingle with chocolate, black liquorice and cool camphor. With air, orange zest, lilies and iris emerge, alongside caramel, cinnamon and ginger. Strawberries and raspberries complete the bouquet.
  • Palate: The whisky is full-bodied and balanced on the palate. It opens with ripe rancio notes reminiscent of apricots, together with roasted coffee and malted barley. Porridge, coffee éclair and juicy white peaches then appear. The slightly rough peach skin also lends smoothness to the palate. Tobacco and dry leaves emerge towards the end.
  • Finish: The long finish has delicate tannins. Currants initially mingle with malted barley, before juicy orange and caramel linger, accompanied by curry and grated ginger. Subtle woody notes and wild strawberries appear on the exhale. The empty glass reveals hints of a smouldering cigar, cocoa, hyacinths and peonies.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glenrothes is located in the town of Rothes in Speyside and was founded in 1878. Between 1963 and 1989, its number of stills increased from four to ten. Alongside its use in blends such as Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse, the single malt also developed a presence through its own vintage bottlings: the first 1979 vintage was released in 1993.

La Maison du Whisky launched the Artist series in 2011. Individual casks are selected for the series, and the whiskies are bottled at cask strength. Distillery, maturation, age and alcohol strength all inform the selection, alongside the artistic design. Different artists lend each limited collection its own visual identity through their labels.
