Special Features:

For this Juniper Hill, Murray McDavid combines maturation in Bourbon Hogsheads with a finish in Port, Madeira and Barolo casks. All three types of finishing cask were being used for whisky maturation for the first time. For the third Juniper Hill release, the Whisky Creations Team brought these different cask influences together: Port and Madeira contribute Portuguese wine traditions, while Barolo adds an Italian influence.

The Single Malt was distilled in 2015 and bottled after eight years in autumn 2023. The release comprises 1,602 bottles, each containing 0.7 litres at 53.5% alcohol. The whisky is not smoky, is neither chill-filtered nor coloured, and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, dark fruit combines with creamy malt notes and a gentle praline aroma.
  • Palate: On the palate, dark chocolate and red berries meet rich fruitcake. Honey, candied ginger and dry spice notes round out the flavours.
  • Finish: In the finish, bold caramel notes and fresh walnuts contrast with gentle oak spice. Black pepper adds a spicy accent.

Distillery/Bottler:

Juniper Hill comes from an unnamed Highland distillery in the hills near the River Findhorn. Its name refers to the juniper shrub. It is one of the long-established distilleries whose Single Malts became known outside Scotland at an early stage. For the Mystery Malt series, Murray McDavid handles the selection, further maturation and bottling of the whisky.

Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. This wine-trade background is reflected in its work with former wine casks, which became a focus for the independent bottler early on. Today, Murray McDavid is based at Coleburn Distillery in Speyside and belongs to Aceo Ltd. Its team brings together specialists in whisky creation, cooperage and warehousing.
