Special Features:

Kavalan Bourbon Oak is the 46% version of the Taiwanese single malt matured in former bourbon casks. It matures exclusively in American white oak casks. For this bottling, the inner wood surface of the casks is shaved back before they are toasted and charred again.

Unlike the cask-strength Solist Ex-Bourbon, Bourbon Oak is reduced to drinking strength with Kavalan spring water. Tropical fruit, mango, vanilla and coconut combine with oak spice and a creamy texture. The whisky is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, tropical fruit and mango combine with vanilla, coconut and spice notes. A light hint of honey complements the fruit.
• Palate: The whisky feels light and creamy on the palate. Cooked apples and raisins meet vanilla ice cream, coconut and gentle oak spice.
• Finish: Creamy vanilla notes linger on the finish, with an impression of ice cream wafer and a little cinnamon. Fresh fruit hints of mango, apricot, mandarin and orange complement the finish. Vanilla joins a restrained woody note with cardamom and pepper.

Distillery/Bottler:

King Car Kavalan Distillery is located in Yilan in northeastern Taiwan. Behind the brand is the King Car Group, whose founder Tian-Tsai Lee initiated the construction of the distillery. Whisky expert Dr. Jim Swan supported the project as a consultant. The distillery was completed in 2005, and distillation began in March 2006. Lee's son Yu-Ting Lee also took on responsibilities within the company.

Kavalan uses spring water from the nearby Xue Shan mountains. Fermentation lasts three to five days and is followed by double distillation in copper pot stills. Cask maturation takes place in Yilan's warm, humid climate. In the five-storey warehouse, the upper floors can reach over 40 degrees Celsius in summer, while temperatures on the lower floors are around 24 degrees. The blending team decides how the matured whiskies will be used and at what drinking strength. The bottles are filled at the distillery's own bottling facility; Bourbon Oak is an official distillery bottling.
