Special Features:

A second maturation gives Lagavulin Distillers Edition its combination of powerful peat smoke and raisin sweetness. The single malt first matures in previously used American and European oak casks. It then moves into recharred American oak casks seasoned with Pedro Ximénez. New, heavily charred American oak cask ends are also part of this cask preparation.

The Distillers Editions have been released annually in limited quantities since 1997. Casks for the series are selected individually to complement the character of each single malt. For Lagavulin, the second maturation adds sweet wine and fruit notes to the smoky base character without pushing the peat into the background. This bottling has an alcohol content of 43% and comes in a 0.7-litre bottle with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, dark oak notes and raisins steeped in alcohol meet sweet wine aromas and fragrant peat smoke. With a little time, the smoke becomes more prominent.
  • Palate: The whisky opens on the palate with an oily, sweet and spicy character and a full body. Raisin sweetness, smoke and roasted malt intertwine without the sweetness becoming intrusive. The peat smoke grows stronger, salty notes emerge and the overall impression becomes drier. A hint of espresso grounds adds to the interplay of sweetness, smoke, salt and spice.
  • Finish: The very long finish remains intensely smoky and feels warming. Deep oak spice accompanies the smoke, which lingers for a long time.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lagavulin stands beside a bay on Islay’s southern coast, close to Port Ellen and the ruins of Dunyveg Castle. John Johnston founded the distillery in 1816. Its equipment includes pear-shaped stills. The barley is malted over local peat smoke, giving the whisky its pronounced smoky character.
