Special Features:

A finish in an American Oak Hogshead shapes this long-matured Ledaig from Murray McDavid's Mission Gold series. The whisky was distilled at Tobermory distillery in 2001 and bottled in 2023 after 21 years of maturation. Cask 800117 yielded 213 bottles; this single-cask bottling was selected exclusively for the German market.

Barley dried over peat provides the foundation for its powerful smoky character. Maritime impressions are balanced by fruit notes ranging from tropical fruit to pomegranate. Murray McDavid bottled the whisky at its cask strength of 52.7%, without chill filtration or added colouring. The 0.7-litre bottle comes with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, smoked meat and spicy oak sit alongside a salty note reminiscent of coastal air.
  • Palate: The whisky is full-bodied on the palate. Austere leather notes, flint and barbecued meat meet pineapple, mango, papaya and pomegranate.
  • Finish: Sweet smoke lingers through the long finish, accompanied by subtle chilli spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Founded in 1798, Tobermory stands beside the harbour of the town of the same name on Mull, an island in Scotland's Hebrides. The distillery produces two distinct styles of single malt: unpeated Tobermory and peated Ledaig. Its water comes from the nearby Gearr Abhainn stream. With its smoky character, Ledaig represents the more robust of these two distillery styles.

Independent bottler Murray McDavid is responsible for selecting and bottling this whisky. The company was founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. Their experience with wine informed the selection of distinctive maturation casks, with wine casks in particular becoming a focus of their work. In 2000, the team joined Jim McEwan in the reopening of Bruichladdich on Islay. Today, Murray McDavid is based at Coleburn in Speyside and belongs to Aceo Ltd.
