Special Features:

After maturing in bourbon hogsheads, this Ledaig spent two years finishing in first-fill tawny port casks from Caves de Murça in Portugal’s Douro Valley. The heavily peated island malt was distilled at Tobermory Distillery in 2009 and bottled by Murray McDavid in 2024, aged 15, for the Benchmark series. The five casks numbered 2200129 to 2200133 yielded 1,547 bottles at 53.2%. The whisky is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Its character is shaped by the contrast between maritime peat smoke, mineral notes and jam-like fruit. The port finish sits alongside Ledaig’s distinctly salty, smoky character.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, smoke mingles with floral hints, mixed berries and a coastal note.
  • Palate: On the palate, salty peat and flint meet plum and berry jam.
  • Finish: The finish feels oily, with fruity barley notes and lingering smoke.

Distillery/Bottler:

Founded in 1798, Tobermory Distillery is the only distillery on the Isle of Mull. Situated by Tobermory harbour, it produces two different single malt styles at the same site: unpeated Tobermory and heavily peated Ledaig. Its water comes from the nearby Gearr Abhainn stream.

Murray McDavid was responsible for this whisky’s tawny port finish and subsequent bottling. The independent bottler was founded in 1994 by wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin together with Gordon Wright of Springbank Distillery. Their experience with wine informed the selection of distinctive maturation casks, particularly former wine casks. Today, Murray McDavid operates at the Coleburn Distillery site in Speyside; the port casks for this Ledaig came from its cask partner Caves de Murça.
