Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 46% | Chill filtration: No | Colouring: No
Special Features:
The 18-year-old Loch Lomond matures in three types of American oak cask. First-fill and second-fill bourbon casks are followed by a re-toasted cask. The casks are worked on in the distillery's own cooperage; Master Blender Michael Henry brings the cask selection together to create this official bottling.
Its full-bodied, rounded character combines baked and caramelised apple with rich toffee and a subtle vanilla note. Sweetness and warmth accompany the fruit, while mature oak and light smoke complement the profile. The whisky is bottled at 46% alcohol, without chill filtration or added colouring.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Green apple and grapefruit combine on the nose. Honeysuckle and mature oak then emerge.
- Palate: Toasted oak and cigar box appear first on the palate. These woody notes give way to green fruit, with apple and gooseberry.
- Finish: The finish is long, bringing dried tea leaves and tobacco leaves into balance with gentle medicinal peat notes and wood smoke.
Distillery/Bottler:
The present-day Loch Lomond Distillery was founded in 1965 by the then owners of Littlemill Distillery and began production in 1966. Initially, it used only straight-neck pot stills; traditional swan-neck pot stills were added in 1998. Spirit from both types of still is used for the 18-year-old single malt.
The two pot still designs, different cut points during distillation, and peated and unpeated malted barley allow the distillery to produce eight distinct single malt styles. A fermentation time of 92 hours develops the underlying fruity character, which is preserved during the subsequent distillation. The distillery's own cooperage repairs used casks and prepares them for further fillings by re-charring them. Michael Henry oversees the development of the single malt range, from distillation through maturation and marrying to bottling.
