Special Features:

An Aba is Macaloney's lightly peated Signature Single Malt, with a peat level of 15 PPM. It brings together whiskies from Kentucky bourbon casks, Spanish Oloroso barriques and Pedro Ximénez casks, Portuguese STR red wine barriques and new American oak casks. The inner wood surface of the STR barriques is shaved, toasted and re-charred.

This combination of casks brings together delicate peat smoke, pine and citrus notes with rum and raisin cake, vanilla pastries, tropical fruit and milk chocolate. The Batch 3 release was bottled in September 2023 at 46% and comprises 692 bottles of 0.7 litres each. The whisky is neither chill-filtered nor coloured and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, light peat, fresh pine and oak meet orange liqueur and lemon sorbet. Rum and raisin cake, liquorice and vanilla sponge cake are joined by ripe banana, gooseberry, redcurrant, dried mango and milk chocolate.
• Palate: The whisky is rich and creamy on the palate. Light peat smoke, burnt heather and campfire embers give way to prunes, dried figs and apricots. Malted milk, apple compote and peach combine with flowering heather, lavender and daffodils, developing into linseed oil, marzipan and lingering oak notes.
• Finish: The finish is dry and lightly peaty, leaving a maritime impression reminiscent of the seashore.

Distillery/Bottler:

Macaloney Brewers & Distillers Ltd produces An Aba in Saanich, near Victoria on Vancouver Island. The distillery uses Canadian barley and island water, along with hand-hammered copper stills from Forsyth's. Its cask selection includes bourbon casks from Kentucky, Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks, and Portuguese red wine barriques.

Founder Graeme Macaloney continues to work at the stills and develop new cask combinations. In this way, the distillery combines Scottish production techniques with Canadian raw materials and its Pacific coast location.
