Special Features:

The cask composition defines An Loy Batch 9: 60% of the whisky comes from bourbon casks and 15% from Portuguese red wine casks, with further portions from Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez casks. Macaloney's uses malted barley from British Columbia for this twice-distilled single malt. The different casks bring fruit and floral notes together with vanilla, malt and spicy oak.

Batch 9 was bottled in September 2023 at 46%, with 362 bottles of 0.7 litres each. The whisky is not smoky, is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring; it comes in gift packaging. Wood spice and a subtle saline note balance its creamy fruit character, while dry oak lingers.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Fruit, floral and sherry notes appear first on the nose. Oak, vanilla and malt then emerge, accompanied by a light sea breeze.
• Palate: The whisky feels creamy on the palate. Caramelised orange with vanilla sauce, fruitcake, blackcurrant and honey mingle with wood spices and lingering oak.
• Finish: Caramel, vanilla and tropical fruit linger through the lasting finish, accompanied by subtle oak spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Macaloney's Island Distillery is in Saanich, near Victoria on Vancouver Island. Founder Graeme Macaloney still works at the stills and experiments with cask combinations. The distillery uses Canadian barley and water from the island, distilling in hand-hammered copper pot stills made by Forsyth. Its cask selection includes bourbon casks from Kentucky, Spanish sherry casks and Portuguese red wine barriques. An Loy is an official distillery bottling.
