MacNair’s Lum Reek 10 Year Old brings together mature single malts from Speyside and Islay with GlenAllachie Single Malt. Billy Walker selected and blended the whiskies before transferring the blend to Spanish sherry casks, wine barriques and Virgin Oak Casks for further maturation. This allowed the components to integrate and take on additional influences from the wood.

Batch 1 was released in February 2022 as the first cask-strength edition of the ten-year-old Lum Reek. The whisky was bottled at its natural cask strength of 55.4%, without chill filtration or added colouring. Its character combines peat smoke with sweet and spicy notes, while dark chocolate and citrus fruit provide a fruity, bittersweet contrast.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, smoke mingles with heather honey and ginger. Cinnamon, dark sugar syrup and vanilla round out the sweet and spicy aromas.
• Palate: The palate offers rich dark chocolate notes alongside ginger and citrus fruit. Smoky spices, plantains and tannins add further flavour.
• Finish: The medium-long to long finish reveals sooty, ashy and chocolate notes. Its earthy character persists as sweet raisins, prunes and dates emerge. A delicate oak note lingers at the end.

Distillery/Bottler:

MacNair’s belongs to the independent The GlenAllachie Distillers Company. Under Master Blender Billy Walker, the brand combines the selection of mature spirits with carefully directed cask maturation. For Lum Reek, Walker blends single malts from different distilleries with GlenAllachie. The whiskies undergo further maturation in GlenAllachie’s warehouses.

In July 2021, MacNair’s broadened its concept to become a Boutique House of Spirits, adding Exploration Rum alongside its whisky range. When the first ten-year-old cask-strength Lum Reek appeared in 2022, Walker had spent fifty years in the spirits industry. The blended malt range allows him to look beyond the whiskies of a single distillery and bring together different regional characters and cask influences.
