Special Features:

American oak shapes this non-smoky single malt from Zuidam. The distillery uses unpeated malted barley for Millstone American Oak. Its fruity base character develops before cask maturation: clear wort undergoes a long, cool fermentation with a combination of brewer’s and distiller’s yeast, followed by slow, gentle distillation. The whisky then matures in American oak casks.

This bottling combines sweet and fruity notes with restrained wood spice. It carries no age statement and is bottled at 43% without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and is supplied in a gift tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, soft vanilla and caramel sit alongside a subtle honey sweetness. Warm notes of tropical fruit and wood complement them.
• Palate: The whisky is smooth and rounded on the palate. Toffee, coconut, honey and caramel meet delicate oak spice, with subtle accents of cinnamon and pepper.
• Finish: Gentle sweetness, light oak notes and oak spice linger through the medium-long to long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Zuidam Distillers is a family business in Baarle-Nassau, near the Dutch-Belgian border. Fred and Hélène van Zuidam began making liqueurs and genever in 1976. Their sons Patrick and Gilbert now run the company; Patrick is responsible for management and Gilbert for sales.

Millstone grew out of Patrick’s ambition to develop a Dutch whisky of his own. In 1996, the family laid down its first experimental whisky casks. The brand name refers to the millstones in the Dutch windmills that grind grain for whisky production. The distillery’s general production methods include a seven-day fermentation and slow distillation in small copper pot stills, which encourage the fruity character of Millstone whiskies. Cask selection then gives the different Millstone bottlings their individual character. In the warm, dry warehouses, an average of 4–6% of the whisky evaporates from the casks each year. This natural loss during maturation is known as the angel’s share.
