Special Features:

This long-aged Mosstowie from a single Refill Sherry Butt was among the releases celebrating Signatory Vintage's 30th anniversary in 2018. Distilled on 30 May 1973, the whisky matured for 45 years in cask number 7622. It was bottled on 14 June 2018, with a release of 410 numbered bottles.

The whisky retains its natural colour and was bottled without chill filtration at a cask strength of 51.6%. The 0.7-litre bottle comes with two glasses and a black wooden box decorated with copper-coloured thistle motifs.

Green herbal notes and pronounced fruitiness lead the flavour profile. Honey and flowers meet tropical fruit, while wood and wax add further dimensions. The long finish combines lemon and spice with a drying sensation.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose is intensely green, fruity and herbal, with a sweetness reminiscent of old yellow Chartreuse. Pollen, honey, yellow flowers and quince jelly mingle with hints of hemp oil and wormwood. With water, menthol becomes more prominent, joined by pipe tobacco, hessian, olive oil, marzipan and dried tropical fruit.
  • Palate: On the palate, green banana, generous golden sultanas and pineapple meet fine woods and concentrated herbal notes. Ointment-like touches and wax complement syrup from tinned fruit and lemon jelly. With water, the wood develops a slight mustard-like pungency. Resinous candied fruit, white pepper and sweetish medicinal notes accompany the still-pronounced herbal character.
  • Finish: The long finish is spicy, lemony and pleasantly drying. Pronounced fruitiness lingers.

Distillery/Bottler:

Mosstowie was produced at Miltonduff Distillery near Elgin in Speyside. In 1964, Hiram Walker had two Lomond stills installed there to give its blenders access to additional malt styles. Perforated plates in their necks allowed different styles of spirit to be produced. The whisky made on these stills was named Mosstowie; both stills were taken out of service in 1981.

Independent bottler Signatory Vintage selected and bottled the whisky from this cask. Andrew Symington founded the company with his brother in 1988. His interest in individual casks had begun while working at Prestonfield House Hotel in Edinburgh. After purchasing Edradour Distillery in 2002, he moved the business to Pitlochry, completing the relocation by 2007. Additional warehouses were also built there to house the cask stocks.
