Special Features:

A single Bourbon Hogshead held this North Port for four decades. The single malt was distilled on 14 December 1976 and matured in cask number 3887. On 1 February 2017, Signatory Vintage bottled the forty-year-old whisky for the Rare Reserve series. The cask yielded 194 bottles at a natural cask strength of 50.4%. The whisky was bottled without dilution with water, chill filtration or added colouring.

Rare Reserve brings together particularly old and rare bottlings within the Cask Strength Collection. This release is presented in a velvet-lined wooden case. Each bottle is individually numbered by hand and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Andrew W. Symington.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Fruity and floral aromas mingle with dried fruit, berries and light-coloured grapes. A gentle campfire note accompanies the bouquet, with a suggestion of fresh pastries in the background.
  • Palate: Dark-roasted espresso beans meet pineapple on the palate. Behind them, cloves, nutmeg and allspice emerge, complemented by lightly spiced apricot jam.
  • Finish: The long finish combines sweet fruit notes with pronounced oak.

Distillery/Bottler:

North Port stood in Brechin in the Scottish Highlands. Brothers David, John and Alexander Guthrie founded the distillery in 1820 under the name Towhead. The Den Burn, which flowed through the site, originally supplied cooling water for its two stills. Much of the malt went into blends, leaving North Port comparatively little known as a single malt. Production ended in 1983, and the distillery was demolished in 1994.

Independent bottler Signatory Vintage highlights the differences between individual casks through its single-cask selections. Rare Reserve labels provide detailed information, including the cask type, distillation and bottling dates, cask number and bottle count. This also preserves a record of the specific maturation history of whiskies from distilleries that no longer exist.
