This ten-year-old Highland single malt comes in a one-litre bottle and spent the entire decade maturing in second-fill ex-bourbon casks made from American oak. Fruity notes of pear, green apple and lemon sit alongside vanilla, honey and oak spice. A subtle salty maritime note complements the vanilla cream notes. The whisky is bottled at 40% and is not smoky.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pear cake and banana combine with vanilla cream, lemon cream and oak spice.
• Palate: The palate reveals green apple, honey and lemon meringue. Pear and a hint of tobacco complement these notes, accompanied by a subtle sea breeze.
• Finish: Salted caramel lingers alongside drying oak on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Pulteney Distillery in Wick produces the single malt; the ten-year-old Old Pulteney is an official bottling. James Henderson founded the distillery in 1826 and named it after the newly built district of Pulteneytown. With no roads connecting Wick to the outside world, barley arrived by ship and whisky left by the same route. The harbour location has thus been part of the distillery’s history from the beginning.

Water for production comes from Loch Hempriggs and flows to the distillery by gravity alone through a canal built by Thomas Telford in 1807. Pulteney uses two copper pot stills for distillation. The unusual flat top of the wash still also shapes the design of the Old Pulteney bottle. Condensation takes place in coiled copper pipes immersed in water-filled vessels, known as worm tubs. The warehouses stand by the sea, providing a cool, humid environment for cask maturation.
