Special Features:

An Oloroso sherry finish shapes this twelve-year-old Royal Brackla. Following maturation in American oak, the Single Malt spends an additional period in sherry casks. For this bottling, Malt Master Stephanie Macleod selected Oloroso casks from Bodegas Jose y Miguel Martin in Jerez, Spain. Her approach is to complement the distillery’s fruity character through cask selection rather than obscure it.

Ripe peaches, apples and black cherries mingle with marzipan, chocolate-coated almonds and muscovado sugar. This bottling belongs to the sherry-finished range introduced in 2021 and is bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in a presentation tube.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, cranberries, cola sweets and damsons sit alongside dark bread and a savoury note of oyster sauce. Toffee pudding and chocolate sauce add further aromas.
  • Palate: The whisky is medium-bodied and slightly oily on the palate. Plum jam and milk chocolate-coated raisins meet toffee cake and candied red apple. Delicate almond butter and Medjool dates complement subtle nutmeg notes, double cream and a hint of orange oil.
  • Finish: The finish is long. As the nutty notes recede, dates and orange oil remain present.

Distillery/Bottler:

Royal Brackla stands on the Cawdor Estate near Nairn in the Scottish Highlands. Captain William Fraser founded the distillery in 1812 and grew his own barley at the time. In 1833, King William IV granted its whisky a Royal Warrant, making it the first Scotch to receive this honour. This royal recognition gave rise to the name Royal Brackla and the epithet The King’s Own Whisky.

The distillery belongs to John Dewar & Sons within the Bacardi group. It uses exclusively Scottish malted barley and distils in copper pot stills. Water from the Cawdor Burn and slow distillation are part of its production approach. The current Single Malt range combines initial maturation in American oak with carefully selected sherry finishes.
