The Port Wood Finish shapes this Swiss malted barley spirit from Seven Seals. Distilled from malted barley at Langatun, the spirit receives its port wine finish after an initial period of maturation in oak. Seven Seals uses a process that accelerates the development of wood-derived aromas. Bottling at cask strength with 58.7% alcohol brings out a robust, full-bodied character.

Floral honey and dark fruits, including prunes, meet nuts and caramelised almonds. Gingerbread and a gentle note of peat smoke complement these impressions. The spirit has a deep amber colour. It contains no added colouring and comes in a bottle containing 0.5 litres, without gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, delicate peat smoke and honeyed sweetness accompany fruity notes of ripe plums. Hazelnut and cinnamon round out the aroma.
• Palate: The spirit is robust and full-bodied on the palate. Smoke combines with the sweetness of dates and honey, while gingerbread adds a spicy note.
• Finish: The long, dry finish leaves concentrated dried-fruit notes and delicate gingerbread spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Seven Seals Innovation AG is based in Stans in the canton of Nidwalden, with production sites in Langenthal and Aarwangen. Central to its approach is a patented process that uses physical processes to accelerate the exchange of aromas between wood and spirit. The company can also use wood offcuts from cask production and shredded wood from retired casks. This approach reduces the time for which casks are tied up and the need for long-term storage.

The distillate for this bottling comes from Langatun Distillery AG. The distillery builds on a family tradition with roots stretching back to 1857. In 2014, whisky production moved to the historic Kornhaus in Aarwangen, while cask storage remained in Langenthal. Distillation and maturation at Langatun therefore take place at separate locations.
