Maturation in selected American and Spanish oak casks shapes this 18-year-old Speyburn. Gentle oak spice accompanies its combination of fruity and chocolate notes. This official distillery bottling has an alcohol content of 46% and comes in a bottle containing 0.7 litres, with gift packaging, without chill filtration or added colouring.

Speyburn added the 18-year-old to its permanent range in 2018. The first annual release was dedicated to Bobby Anderson, who had then managed the distillery for 18 years. For its launch, Speyburn announced annual worldwide availability of 9,000 bottles.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Sweet toffee, sugared almonds and lush tropical fruit lead on the nose. A hint of caramelised apples gives way to a very subtle, honey-like smoky note.
• Palate: The whisky is full-bodied and creamy on the palate. Dark chocolate and toffee combine with gentle oak spice, followed by a hint of citrus.
• Finish: The long finish is bittersweet and lightly smoky.

Distillery/Bottler:

Speyburn lies near Rothes in a narrow valley in Speyside. John Hopkins founded the distillery in 1897 and commissioned Charles C. Doig to design it. With limited space available at the site, Doig arranged the facilities across several floors. The distinctive pagoda roof remains part of its appearance today. Water for production comes from the Granty Burn.

Today's production uses wooden and stainless-steel washbacks and long fermentation times. The first distillation takes place in a large wash still, followed by a second distillation in two smaller spirit stills. Traditional worm tub condensers cool the vapour inside copper pipes surrounded by cold water. They contribute to the spirit's robust body. For maturation, Speyburn uses casks including former bourbon and sherry casks, which rest in traditional dunnage warehouses.
