Special Features:

Heavily charred oak casks give Talisker Dark Storm its distinctive character. This intensive cask treatment supports the combination of sweet oak notes and bold spice with the smoky character of this single malt from the Isle of Skye. The edition was developed for the travel-retail market, meaning sales through travel outlets.

Alongside the powerful peat smoke, maritime saltiness remains noticeable. Honey, vanilla and fruity touches provide a sweet counterpoint, while pepper and chilli emphasise the spicy side. The whisky is offered at 45.8% in a 1-litre bottle and comes with gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, smoked ham notes meet pepper and chilli. Vanilla and malt complement the spicy, smoky aroma.
  • Palate: On the palate, sweet oak combines with powerful peat smoke. Sour cherry compote and fresh lemon add fruity touches, accompanied by honey and a little vanilla.
  • Finish: The very long finish reveals roasted nuts and Talisker’s characteristic peppery spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Talisker stands in Carbost on the shores of Loch Harport on the Scottish island of Skye. The MacAskill brothers opened the distillery in 1830; it is the island’s oldest operating distillery. Its history includes changes of ownership and a fire, yet its coastal location remains a central part of the brand.

Talisker’s production methods include Oregon pine washbacks and a fermentation period of around 70 hours, which contributes to the development of fruity notes. This is followed by double distillation in copper pot stills. The U-shaped vapour pipes used in the first distillation stage encourage some of the condensed spirit to flow back into the stills. For subsequent condensation, the distillery uses traditional worm tubs, where the vapour is cooled as it passes through coiled pipes. These methods are part of the distillery’s general production practices; the heavily charred maturation casks add their own influence to the Dark Storm edition.
