Special Features:

For this Tamnavulin expression, a finish in French Cabernet Sauvignon red wine casks follows maturation in American ex-bourbon casks. It combines two different previous cask contents: bourbon maturation is followed by a second maturation period in former red wine casks. Part of the Cask Editions range, this expression adds red and dark summer berries to the distillery’s sweet, soft and fruity style.

Alongside the fruit notes, the finishing period introduces hints of cinnamon and cocoa. This non-smoky single malt is offered at 40% in a bottle containing 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, pronounced floral aromas mingle with orchard fruit and lime marmalade. Cinnamon, poached pears and almonds add further notes.
  • Palate: The palate reveals nectarines, damsons and gingerbread. Sweet red berries and banana bread then emerge.
  • Finish: The medium-length finish recalls chocolate confectionery, apricot jam and ripe plums. Juicy ginger and an earthy cinnamon note complement the lingering flavours.

Distillery/Bottler:

Tamnavulin opened in Speyside in 1966. The distillery grounds contain a historic wool-processing mill whose origins date back to the 16th century. Its wooden waterwheel also appears on the brand’s bottles. Following closure in 1995 and extensive refurbishment in 2007, the distillery continued to develop its style: in 2010, it changed the shape of its stills to produce a fuller-bodied spirit particularly suited to maturation in wine casks.

Production begins with milling malted barley and mixing it with natural spring water from the surrounding mountains. Yeast ferments the sugar-rich wort before the resulting liquid is distilled twice in copper pot stills. Tamnavulin uses the heart of the distillation for cask maturation, while the heads and tails are distilled again. Double Cask launched the current range of bottlings in 2016, with red wine cask editions joining from 2019.
