The smoky edition of Terence Hill The Hero brings together two distilleries and two different cask influences. St. Kilian Distillers blends its own whisky from former rum casks with triple-distilled whiskey from the Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk, Ireland. The Irish component matured in American ex-bourbon casks. German whisky and Irish whiskey thus come together in a bottling whose character combines powerful smoke with fruity and creamy, sweet notes.

The Terence Hill series grew out of a licensing partnership brokered for St. Kilian by Bavaria Sonor Licensing. The mild and smoky editions were launched on 1 December 2021, adding Bud Spencer's long-standing film partner to the existing Bud Spencer series.

This pale-gold whisky is bottled at 49% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle. It is neither chill-filtered nor coloured and is supplied without gift packaging. At the World-Spirits Awards 2023, the smoky edition received the Group Winner and Spirits of the Year awards.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Wood smoke leads on the nose. Generous cream toffee, sweet molasses and Bourbon vanilla provide a sweet contrast. Vineyard peach and mango add fruit, while marzipan appears only as a subtle nuance.
• Palate: The whisky is powerful and intense on the palate. Peat smoke meets molasses, creamy vanilla and cream caramel. Ripe peach accompanies these notes, with a trace of mango remaining in the background. Spicy oak and white pepper create a warming impression.
• Finish: On the finish, creamy toffee and sweet vanilla give way to oak spice with a slight cocoa note. Delicate smoke lingers for a long time.

Distillery/Bottler:

St. Kilian Distillers is based in Rüdenau near Miltenberg am Main, in the Lower Franconian part of the Odenwald. Andreas Thümmler and Irish whisky specialist David F. Hynes developed the distillery project in 2012. After four years of construction, production began in 2016 with two copper Forsyth stills, each with a capacity of 6000 litres. First Kilian, its first three-year-old single malt, followed in May 2019.

To make its own whisky, St. Kilian uses four Douglas fir washbacks built by Joseph Brown (JB) Vats in Dufftown, Scotland. Slow-running agitators distribute the yeast evenly, while integrated cooling plates allow the fermentation temperature to be controlled. This combination of wooden fermentation vessels and targeted technical control is part of the distillery's working method.

For The Hero, St. Kilian also blends the German and Irish whiskies. The Great Northern Distillery in Dundalk supplies the triple-distilled Irish component. The bottling therefore combines St. Kilian's own production with whisky from a second distillery.
