Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 49.8% | Chill filtration: No
Special Features:
Twelve years of finishing in red wine barriques shape this Tobermory from the Mission Gold range. Distilled in 1995, the single malt initially matured in bourbon hogsheads. Murray McDavid's original team, led by Jim McEwan, then transferred it into red wine barriques. In 2014, the casks moved to the warehouses at Coleburn Distillery, where the team monitored the whisky's continued maturation.
In autumn 2024, the whisky was bottled at 49.8% after a total of 28 years of maturation. The release comprises 573 bottles. It is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring. Its fruity character ranges from currants and dark plums to strawberries and cherries, complemented by maritime impressions and a delicate smoky nuance.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, redcurrants and dark plums mingle with salted caramel.
- Palate: On the palate, notes of grilled strawberries meet maritime impressions and a hint of smoke.
- Finish: Red cherries, salty sea spray and herbal tea linger on the finish.
Distillery/Bottler:
Founded in 1798, Tobermory Distillery is the only whisky distillery on the Isle of Mull and stands in the harbour town of the same name. It produces two distinct single malt styles: fruity, unpeated Tobermory and smoky Ledaig. The spirit used for this release also comes from its unpeated Tobermory production.
Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by London wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin, together with Gordon Wright of Springbank Distillery. The independent bottler established its reputation early on by maturing whisky in a variety of casks, particularly high-quality wine casks. Today, Murray McDavid belongs to Aceo Ltd. and operates from Coleburn Distillery in Speyside. This Tobermory's extended red wine finish reflects that approach.
