Successive maturation in bourbon and sherry casks shapes The Balvenie DoubleWood. This twelve-year-old single malt first matures in American oak casks that previously held bourbon, before receiving a finish in European oak Oloroso sherry casks. Honey and vanilla meet fruity depth, nutty sweetness and spice.

After cask maturation, the whiskies are married for three to four months in large wooden vessels known as tuns. This additional resting period is part of the DoubleWood production process. The whisky is bottled at 40% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle supplied with a tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, sweet fruit and Oloroso sherry notes mingle with honey and vanilla.
• Palate: Nutty sweetness, dried fruit and cinnamon meet sherry notes, creamy toffee and a hint of oak.
• Finish: The long, warming finish leaves a delicate note of spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

William Grant founded Balvenie distillery in 1892 in Dufftown, in Scotland’s Speyside region, below neighbouring Glenfiddich distillery. Both draw water from the Robbie Dhu springs. Balvenie has its own floor maltings; the current malting floor opened in 1931.

Growing its own barley, traditional floor malting, coopering and coppersmithing are all part of the distillery’s daily work. Alongside distillation, cask maintenance and the craft of working on copper stills therefore remain rooted at the site. Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie is responsible for selecting and maturing the whiskies.
