Special Features:
Crossfire Hurricane Reserve brings together aged rums from Clarendon, Hampden Estate, Long Pond and Worthy Park Estate in a blend with a distinctly Jamaican character. Softer aged rums form its foundation, while older spirits with more pronounced Jamaican funk add aromatic depth. Older pot still rums are the main focus of the Reserve. Pot still and column still spirits, together with different fermentation methods, bring several styles into the blend. The rum is produced in small batches and contains no added sugar.
The Reserve is intended to be enjoyed neat or over ice. Its generous fruit character, chocolate notes and oak spice also suit short, spirit-forward cocktails such as a Rum Old Fashioned or a Jamaican Manhattan. It is bottled at 40% in a 0.7-litre bottle.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, warm spice notes and nutmeg mingle with pineapple and ripe banana. These are joined by molasses, gentle chocolate notes, clearly perceptible oak and a hint of orange.
- Palate: The rum is smooth and full-bodied on the palate. Sweet tropical fruit and ripe peach combine with dark chocolate. Baked banana is also discernible.
- Finish: The long finish is sweet and creamy, with persistent oak. Its spice is accompanied by subtle lingering fruit notes. Creamy vanilla also lingers.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Rolling Stones are co-founders and owners of Crossfire Hurricane. The brand draws on their connection to Jamaica: in 1972, the band recorded the album Goats Head Soup in Kingston. The name Crossfire Hurricane comes from the opening line of Jumpin' Jack Flash. Ian Burrell and Cairbry Hill contributed to the development of the rum blends; Burrell brings his longstanding experience as a rum expert, while Hill has a background in microbiology, bartending and drinks development.
The four participating distilleries use different production methods. Hampden Estate employs long, natural fermentations and traditional pot stills to produce ester-rich rums with intense fruit character. Long Pond also produces its boldly aromatic spirits in pot stills. Worthy Park Estate uses molasses from its own sugar production and distils in a Forsyths double-retort pot still. Clarendon has both pot stills and a column still, allowing it to produce lighter and heavier rums through different fermentation times and distillation methods.
Within the blend, Hampden and Long Pond contribute particularly expressive aromatic accents. Worthy Park helps bring the individual styles together, while Clarendon adds body and depth. The Reserve's character therefore rests not on a single distillery, but on the interplay of their different spirits.
