Special Features:
The current interpretation of Stauning RØG combines smoked barley single malt with malted rye; the earlier version, by contrast, was a smoked single malt. Stauning uses locally grown grain, malts all of it on its own malting floor and kilns it over heather and Danish peat. It is then double-distilled in 24 small, direct-fired copper pot stills.
The whisky first matures in new American oak casks before being finished in first-fill Madeira casks. Its soft, balanced smoke recalls a campfire rather than medicinal smoke. Toasted grain, gentle stone fruit, caramelised oak and delicate spices complete the profile. RØG is bottled without added colour or chill filtration at 43% in 0.7-litre bottles.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose combines soft campfire smoke with toasted grain.
- Palate: Gentle stone fruit, caramelised oak and delicate spices emerge on the palate.
- Finish: The light smoke lingers through the finish, while the mouthfeel remains soft and rounded.
Distillery/Bottler:
Nine friends founded Stauning Whisky on Denmark’s west coast in 2005 and set up their first production facility in a former butcher’s shop. They distilled for the first time in August 2006, and the first commercial bottles appeared in 2011.
In 2018, Stauning opened a purpose-built modern distillery. Despite the increased capacity, locally grown rye and barley, open floor malting and small, direct-fired stills continue to define the distillery’s approach.
