Veritas brings together three rums from two Caribbean distilleries. Foursquare in Barbados supplies unaged rum from its Coffey column still and pot still rum matured for two years in ex-bourbon casks. Unaged pot still rum from Jamaica’s Hampden Estate completes the blend. Richard Seale combines these components in a blend developed specifically for cocktails.

The components are produced, blended and bottled in the Caribbean. No sugar, flavourings or neutral alcohol are added to Veritas. It is also unfiltered and contains no added colouring. This preserves the light golden hue of the aged component rather than removing the rum’s colour entirely.

At 47%, the blend brings tropical fruit, citrus peel and vegetal notes to classic rum cocktails. Its character pairs particularly well with lime juice in a Daiquiri, though Veritas can also be tasted neat.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, tropical fruit combines with green, vegetal notes. Sugar cane and lime zest add to the aromas.
• Palate: On the palate, citrus peel and cane sugar meet passion fruit, accompanied by sweet pastry notes.
• Finish: The finish is vegetal, combining a gently sweet impression with a dry close.

Distillery/Bottler:

Foursquare has close ties to the Seale family. Their rum company, R L Seale & Co, was founded in 1926. Richard Seale represents the fourth generation in the family business and, as Master Distiller and Master Blender, oversees distillation and the blending of its rums. He also drove the development of the distillery completed in 1996 at the historic Foursquare site. Precise fermentation control and technical advances in distillation are integral to its approach.

Hampden Estate is located in Trelawny, Jamaica, and maintains a long tradition of pot still distillation. Open cedar fermentation vats and long fermentations are characteristic of its production. These fermentations use ingredients including dunder, the residue left after distillation. This approach contributes to the formation of esters that give the rums their pronounced aromatic character. Luca Gargano of Velier brought the two distilleries together for Veritas.
