Special Features:
Maritime Rum Cask is a triple-distilled Irish single malt produced in small batches from Irish malted barley and Mullaghmesha mountain water. It is initially matured in first-fill bourbon casks before being finished in rum casks from Consorcio Licorero Nacional. It is bottled at 46%.
The custom-blown spherical bottle made specifically for the Maritime range features an offset pouring spout and reflects the founders’ maritime background. The whiskey is bottled without chill filtration or added colouring.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose reveals honey, vanilla, caramel and chocolate, accompanied by a restrained fruitiness with both fresh and dried fruit impressions.
- Palate: Roasted notes of coffee, toast and chocolate emerge on the palate.
- Finish: The finish is dry.
Distillery/Bottler:
West Cork Distillers began in 2003 as a joint project by John O’Connell, Ger McCarthy and Denis McCarthy, who had been friends since childhood. Initially, two small stills stood in a room behind Denis McCarthy’s house in Union Hall. As the business grew, it moved to Skibbereen in 2014, where the current Marsh Road facility commenced operations in 2020.
West Cork combines distillation, cask maturation and bottling at its Marsh Road site. The facility comprises 16 pot stills, three column stills, five bottling lines and seven warehouses. The company is wholly Irish-owned and describes its facility as the country’s largest wholly Irish-owned distillery.
