A finish in Japanese Mizunara oak gives this third Amahagan edition its distinctive direction. Its foundation is Edition No. 1, for which Nagahama blends its own malt components with malt whiskies from abroad. The subsequent finishing period introduces the characteristic fragrance of Mizunara wood to this World Malt.

Malty sweetness and warm fruit notes meet aromatic wood. With some time in the glass, the wood influence becomes more pronounced, taking on a sweet, caramel-like character. On the palate, orange cake and brown sugar give way to the more bitter character of dark chocolate.

The whisky is bottled at 47%, without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is sweet and layered, with orange and red apple. With a little time, fragrant Mizunara wood unfolds, accompanied by caramel and sweet oak notes.
• Palate: Brown sugar and orange cake initially lead the palate. The bitter note of dark chocolate then gradually spreads.
• Finish: The long finish combines lively citrus notes with warm woody tones and a distinct bitter note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Nagahama lies at the northern end of Lake Biwa in Japan's Shiga Prefecture. The distillery began operating in November 2016, established alongside a craft brewery with an adjoining restaurant that had been running since 1996. Its small, unusually shaped Aranbic stills are among its defining features. Their narrow lyne arms contribute to the rich, malty character of the distillery's own spirit.

The Amahagan range was created to develop the art of blending before the release of the distillery's own single malts. For this, the team combines its own production with malt whiskies from abroad. The brand name playfully reflects this link to the distillery: Nagahama spelled backwards becomes Amahagan.
