Special Features:
In this release from the Cask Craft Collection, Auchroisk’s malty character meets the influence of small American oak casks. Murray McDavid finished Cask Craft Batch 2 in bourbon quarter casks from Koval Distillery. The compact cask format intensifies the interaction between whisky and wood, giving the Auchroisk a softer, creamier character.
Sweet malt, light citrus and a hint of mixed nuts define the underlying character. The bourbon casks add creamy vanilla, caramel, tropical fruit and sweet spice, while crisp apple, ripe mango and honeyed cereal also emerge in the finished whisky.
This non-smoky single malt is offered at 44.5% in a 0.7-litre bottle. It is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose reveals sweet malt, pronounced apple, light citrus and ripe pineapple. A hint of mixed nuts accompanies the light, airy aroma; once the glass is empty, earthy suggestions of potting soil and hay emerge.
- Palate: The first impression on the palate is sweet and creamy, with vanilla, caramel, crisp apple and ripe mango. Lightly bitter, nutty and herbal notes then unfold. Spice and pepper gain prominence with each sip, accompanied by gentle honey sweetness, a little citrus and possibly a suggestion of almond.
- Finish: The medium-length finish begins with honeyed cereal, tropical fruit and sweet oak spice. The sweetness quickly recedes, however, as bitter, woody, herbal and peppery notes become dominant.
Distillery/Bottler:
Auchroisk Distillery is located near Mulben in Speyside and began operating in 1974. Much of its whisky is used in blends, making Auchroisk comparatively rare as a single malt in its own right.
Murray McDavid was founded in 1994 by wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. The independent bottler specialised early on in the additional maturation of Scotch whisky in casks with differing characteristics and now operates from the historic Coleburn Distillery in Speyside. For this release, Murray McDavid selected single malt from Auchroisk, finished it in Koval bourbon quarter casks and bottled it as Batch BBN-02.
