Special Features:

The 24-year-old Balmenach belongs to Atom Brands’ first Wormtub Single Cask Series and spent its entire maturation in a single Oloroso sherry butt. The single malt was bottled at its natural cask strength of 61.4%, with the cask yielding 309 bottles. The whisky is non-chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Green apple, creamy malt, brown butter, vanilla fudge and rice pudding combine with candied fruit and mandarin. Caramelised tropical fruit, toffee and old oak lead into plum jam, milk chocolate, pepper and nutmeg.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, green apple, condensed milk and creamy malt combine with brown butter and vanilla fudge. Mild oak, dry hay, rice pudding and distinctly tart candied fruit add further depth.
• Palate: The whisky is lively and full of character on the palate: juicy, creamy malt, mandarin, caramelised tropical fruit, toffee popcorn and old oak develop into estery fruit notes and a gentle warmth of pepper and nutmeg.
• Finish: In the finish, sweet toffee and barley sugar intertwine with pepper salami, plum jam and a trace of aged cheese, while caramel, milk chocolate and charred oak remain present.

Distillery/Bottler:

Balmenach is located near Cromdale in Speyside and was officially licensed by James MacGregor in 1824. After closing in 1993, the distillery was acquired by Inver House in 1997 and resumed production the following year.

The distillery ferments its mash in six Douglas fir washbacks and distils with three pairs of comparatively small stills. The vapour then passes through copper coils approximately 90 metres long, submerged in the cold-water vats of traditional worm-tub condensers. The limited copper contact resulting from this process is associated with a heavier, more robust spirit character.

This particular release forms part of Atom Brands’ first Wormtub Single Cask Series, which brings together whiskies from Scottish distilleries that use traditional worm-tub condensers. That Boutique-y Whisky Company bottled the whisky.
